Word From the Boss
I got two emails today. The first email was from my VP letting me know that I need to get on a new project within the next two weeks. It's pretty clear that he's indicating that if I don't I'll need to leave the company. It's really not a big threat if you've read just about any of my posts on this site. I'm still seeking out a local project, and would probably even try it out if sounded at all interesting. But if nothing works out, it's no big deal. In fact, it would make my decision to leave all the easier. So I might actually have a choice of resigning, or waiting for the company to let me go. And in fact, if it did let me go it would be because there's a lack of work for me in my area, and therefore a layoff. So I could get severance pay and unemployment. I don't think I'll take this route though, as I don't want to burn any bridges. Plus, I'd rather be able to say that I quit instead of having been laid off.

Then came the next email. It was congratulating me on my 5 years "of service" to the company and wishing me "continued prosperity". I had to laugh at getting this email shortly after the email from my VP. As a token of the companies appreciation I was able to go to a website and pick from an assortment of gifts. It came down to a Movado watch and a GPS device. I've been thinking about getting a GPS to try out some geo-caching, but I decided that for 5 years of busting my ass for this company I better get something that has a chance of lasting a while. So I selected the watch (which was also worth $100 more than the GPS). Looks like I'll get the gift just in time before I quit.
